Neuroprotección neonatal mediante sulfato de magnesio, ¿Es efectivo?



El principal factor de riesgo de parálisis cerebral infantil es la prematuridad y el bajo peso al nacimiento (menos de 1500 g).

En las últimas décadas, se ha propuesto la aplicación de sulfato de magnesio como mecanismo neuroprotector en el recién nacido prematuro.

El sulfato de magnesio posee propiedades antioxidantes y antiinflamatorias que producen una estabilización hemodinámica y neuronal de la corteza cerebral. Su aplicación debe considerarse en mujeres con una edad gestacional menor de 31 semanas con riesgo inminente de parto prematuro en las siguientes 24 horas.

Se estima que reduce al menos en un 30% el riesgo de parálisis cerebral infantil severa y moderada y en un 45% el riesgo de sufrir cualquier secuela neurológica, disminuyendo en un 15% el riesgo de muerte perinatal.
